September DRF/NTRA NHC Contests
This September, handicapping contest players will get two chances to earn a berth in the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship (NHC) to be held in Las Vegas in January 2014 with separate two-day contests to be held Sept. 14-15 at Arlington International Racecourse and Sept. 21-22 at Trackside Villa Park. Each contest will be a live-money handicapping contest on races from Arlington.
The contests are free to enter. To participate a player exchanges $600 for a contest wagering card (with $300 to be used each day) and wagers on at least one Arlington International race each contest day. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. CT and close at 3 p.m. CT. Post time for Arlington on each contest day is 1 p.m. CT.
At the end of each two-day contest, the player who has accumulated the highest bankroll (subject to verification) will be the winner of the DRF/NTRA NHC berth and a $350 travel voucher to be used toward their travel to Las Vegas for the DRF/NTRA NHC. First prize is in the 2013 NHC was worth $750,000 with cash prizes paid down to the top 40 finishers. The winner of this contest must be able to travel to Las Vegas for the DRF/NTRA NHC – there is no cash equivalent prize.
A new twist for these contests is that the player’s Saturday bankroll will be carried over to Sunday. For example if a player on Saturday runs his/her bankroll up to $2,000, that player would start Sunday with a bankroll of $2,300 ($2,000 Saturday bankroll plus the player’s own $300). The player with the lead (subject to verification) after Saturday’s races will receive a $1,000 prize.
The contest will be organic to a typical day at the track, meaning that players will have the flexibility to wager in all Arlington pari-mutuel pools, and have freedom to participate from any location within Arlington (Sept. 14-15) and the Trackside Off-Track Betting facility in Villa Park (Sept. 21-22) as there is no need for assigned contest wagering windows. However, all wagers must be made using the contest card at self-service terminals only. Players may invest winnings into future wagers.
Complete contest rules:
HorsePlayer magazine Midwest correspondent M. Scott McMannis will conduct a handicapping seminar each day at both contests beginning at 11:30 a.m. and will remain on hand to answer questions throughout the afternoon. In addition to the Sept. 14-15 and Sept. 21-22 NHC Qualifiers, Trackside Waukegan will offer a feeder contest on Sept. 7 where the top three finishers will receive paid berths into the Sept. 21-22 Trackside Villa Park Qualifier (worth $600 each). The feeder contest will require a $100 buy in and the winner(s) must use their prize to participate in the Sept. 21-22 tournament as no cash equivalent prize will be offered.
Rules for the Sept. 7 feeder tournament will be the same as the other September contests in that only wagers on Arlington International Racecourse races can be made as part of the contest.
